Television viewing used to be as simple as positioning an antenna on your roof; wiring was attached between the antenna and your set inside the home. It is still possible to receive free television over-the-air, but it has many limitations and reception issues. Luckily, technology has advanced considerably to offer two main types of television viewing service options: satellite or cable.

Although both television pay services provide viewers with a myriad of different channels to choose from, there are several differences between the carrier types, such as equipment, fees, programming, reliability, and reception quality. Comparing the two services together can help the consumer choose his or her best personal option for home television excitement.

Equipment

The majority of homes have previously installed cable outlets into the physical building. These preexisting cable access points make cable television simple to install with minimal equipment; commonly, only a cable box for each desired television is necessary to receive cable.

An installer just needs to run coaxial cable from the cable access points to the individual boxes and images appear on the television. Even if the consumer is requesting a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cable box, the basic installation and equipment are the same.

In contrast, satellite installation requires more equipment. A dish must be installed at a high point on a home, such as the roof, to receive the space communication. In addition, cabling must be routed from the dish to each television receiver box installed in the home, including DVR box types.

Consumers do not usually need to purchase the dish outright since many service companies are trying to outfit as many homes as possible with this service type for future customers.

Fees

Overall, most cable packages will cost a bit more than space originating services since local taxes must be incorporated into the monthly service charges, making each individual channel more expensive than a comparable space signal. But, many space communication services require separate fees for multiple boxes within one home.

Both services also have different bundles of channels that can change the monthly fee structure; in general, space service will normally provide more main television channels for less in one bundle, but charge for additional channels at a premium. Cable television will charge more upfront fees for the basic channel lineup, but will bill less for subsequent channel packages.

Programming

Space services are known for more channel choices since the signals originate from Earth orbiting equipment which allows more channel access from different states or even countries. Consumers should keep in mind that cable television is from a local service source; local television channels will be part of the basic programming available through cable without any extra fees.

Since space signals must allocate certain local channels to different customers throughout the nation, most service companies charge an extra fee just to access the local channel feeds. Currently, both services now provide digital programming, rather than an analog feed for cable television, since the United States mandated the digital change in 2009.

Reliability

On average, cable television has more service interruptions than space signal services. These interruptions are mainly due to wiring issues between the service provider and the individual homes. In contrast, space signals do not have any physical wiring that can fail which makes it have less interruptions over the course of the service.

Check these Top 5 SUPER Big Screen TVs That Money Can Buy

Reception Quality

If you live in a region that receives a lot of cloud cover or periodic storms, space signal services will have interruptions from the bad weather. Signals cannot penetrate through thick cloud cover; as a result, programming becomes pixelated and blacks out.

On the other hand, cable television can withstand bad weather, unless a physical wire is damaged. Consumers will need to decide for themselves which service works best in their particular area.

Overall, both service types provide a fun television experience with a few key differences in fee structures and channel lineups. In the end, choosing between cable and space signals is a personal choice for each consumer.

Top 5 Awesomely Humongous TVs

There is nothing better after a hard day at the office than kicking back on the couch and watching some awesome Direct TV programming on the tube. No matter whether you are watching a hilarious new TV show, a Hollywood blockbuster, or a big-time sporting event, the experience is always better on an immense, hangar-sized television.

The following is a guide to the top 5 best over-sized televisions with at least 100 measurable inches available for your viewing pleasure:

Sharp Aquos 108-inch LCD TV

The list starts with the Sharp Aquos 108-inch monster which has every merit to boast to be the largest LCD TV. This marvel of technology offers viewers a sparkling resolution of 1920 X 1080 pixels. This is the largest commercially available LCD TV, and it would be the dream of any home theater aficionado. Excellence like this does not come cheap, as the price tag is just over a hundred grand.

Panasonic 150-inch Screen ‘Life Screen’ Plasma TV

An even more monstrous home TV is available for plasma fans. Panasonic offers a 150-inch screen that boasts a stupendous 4096 X 2160 pixels. This 11 foot high behemoth retails for a cool $150,000, and it has the danger of keeping its owners trapped inside and glued to it for the rest of their lives.

Techovision Luxio 205-inch LED TV

LED TVs are upping the ante in the big-ass TV sweepstakes. The company Techovision sports an LED model called the Luxio that measures in at a jaw-dropping 205 inches. This 1344 X 768 resolution screen will only set its owners back a mere half a million.

Fujitsu Super Frontech Vision 231-inch LED TV

An even bigger LED is available from Fujitsu. The Super Frontech Vision boasts a mind-boggling size of 231 inches, which is the biggest TV currently available to the general public. It runs around the same price as the Technovision Luxio, $500,000.

It is bigger than the Luxio, but it has poorer resolution. It only sports a 512 X 288 pixel resolution, so viewers need to be sitting 15 feet away from it to get a clear picture. Not to mention that its owners will probably have to knock out a wall to install it.

Godzillatron 134-feet Super Huge HDTV

Those are the best big screens available to the general public, but there are of course bigger TVs at venues such as sports stadiums. The most impressive is known as Godzillatron, located at the University of Texas. This massive $8 million HDTV measures an enormous 16.9 ft. X 134 ft., sporting a resolution of 2064 X 848 pixels.

So if you have some money to burn, why not purchase one of these beauties? It will give your family a whole new appreciation for movie night.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last year, you know that 3D technology is this year’s entertainment buzzword. But some consumers still think 3D glasses look too nerdy or aren’t comfortable wearing them. I’m one such guy, who hates the idea of having to wear a 3D glass over my eyeglasses — they look weird, are irritating to wear and simply don’t ‘look cool’!

This is one BIG reason why consumers are reluctant to bring 3D into their own home when thinking of going for a ‘big screen 3D TV‘. Plus, the associated high price tags of these glass-required 3D TVs push the average TV watchers away.

In an innovative move, Toshiba is introducing a glasses-free 3D TV viewing option. At the unveiling this month at the IFA Technology Fair in Berlin, 3D enthusiasts stood on a line watching Toshiba’s glass-less 3D display without glasses.

The so-called autostereoscopic displays [also called "glasses-free 3D" or "glasses-less 3D"] use special optical foils to create two different images for the left and right eyes. To allow different viewing positions – for instance, when the viewer moves his head – they need up to ten different views of an image. Eye tracking has been used in a variety of systems in order to limit the number of displayed views to just two, or to enlarge the stereoscopic sweet spot.

It’s clear that 3D is going to play an important role in the evolution of video consumption. Glasses-free 3D technology could help to accelerate 3D adoption by making 3D functionality more appealing and accessible to consumers.

The current implementations still leave a lot to be desired, but they provide very clear evidence that the consumer electronics giants are heading in the right direction. Someone that figures out how to do glasses-free 3D right could own the next wave of 3D television sets.

With 3D blockbusters like Avatar scoring megabucks in the theaters, 3D cinema’s jump to the living room is all but a foregone conclusion. But where does that leave all your old 2D files and DVDs? If you have some old favorite movies in 2D DVD format and would love to convert them into 3D, then there is hope. Using 2D to 3D Converter software, you can convert a normal 2D DVD/Blu-ray/video to fantastic 3D video available in a variety of formats like AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV, M2TS, TS, etc.

The output 3D of 2D to 3D Converter can be side-by-side 3D, anaglyph 3D, and two separate files, and can be played on computer, some 3D TV, glasses-free 3D smartphones, or other compatible 3D display device.

If you have some blue-ray 3D DVDs and want to take backup of your favorite movies or 3D games, you can use Blu-ray 3D Ripper applications for Blu-ray 3D to 3D video conversion. The output 3D video can be played on computer using certain software player like Stereoscopic Player and NVIDIA 3D Vision Video Player, directly on your 3D TV, and can also be played on various glasses-free 3D smartphones like HTC EVO 3D, LG Optimus 3D P920 etc.

3D technology goes beyond just TV. There’s camcorders, cell phones, gaming systems and even a laptop coming out by next year.

Samsung, a worldwide leader in electronics technology, announced on June 17, 2011 that they were celebrating the sale of the two millionth unit of their Smart TV. The announcement was made on Samsung’s corporate blog, and was published as a social media news piece. What is remarkable about this sales mark is that it was reached only three months of the Smart TV’s debut. That lucky set number 2,000,000 was sold on June 15.

The Smart TV is a premium television, reflective of the massive “smart” anything trend. Where we have already gone through smart phones and other products, now we have a smart TV—one which is billed by Samsung as being a “gateway,” through which multiple entertainment platforms like video and audio content, social networking, games, news and more can be accessed through the television. The giant Smart TV connects to the internet via Ethernet cable, a Samsung wireless adaptor, or wirelessly in a home with a wireless network enabled.

What Is Samsung Smart TV?

The TV can gain access to special services to select and suggest movies on demand, an iPlayer (like a virtual TiVo), email, Facebook, Twitter, etc. The Smart TV can also be used to surf the web for playable content. Additionally, users can chat with services like Skype (and make phone calls and use video chat), and a virtual network can be set up linking all wireless media devices (phones, cameras, PCs, etc.), for centralized playback via the TV. This is, as of now, the Godfather of HDTV products.

Samsung has had HDTV since the beginning of 2009, but only in 2011 has this Korean electronics giant taken on the “Smart TV” name to brand the product. So, why is this happening now? Because Samsung is debuting a new version of an internet portal called the “Smart Hub.” So, to link the names might invite people to buy both products, thinking they are both necessary.

The Smart TV is actually a new reboot of an older product, but it is definitely improved over the older version, especially in the GUI (graphics user interface), functionality, design, and greatly enriched content that it varied and interactive.

Of the 2 million sets sold thus far, Samsung reports that about 730,000 were sold in the North American market, which is the biggest market for television sets in the entire world. Another 710,000 Smart TVs were sold in Europe, mainly in France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany.

Samsung also commented that, although their Smart TV was introduced into the Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian and African markets (which are now beginning to emerge as power players, too), sales numbers were high in those regions, with 170,000 units sold in the Middle East and Africa and 270,000 sold in Southeast Asia. 120,000 of the sets were sold in South Korea, Samsung’s home base.

Samsung further broke the sales figures down in order to drive their point home and make the data more relevant. According to the manufacturer, the 2011 Smart TV only took 25 days after its early April 2011 debut to post the half-million units sold sales mark, then the one million sales mark was hit by the end of April. After that, sales were steady, averaging out to about 150,000 TVs sold per week, which is 22,000 every day, or 926 every hour, or 15.4 every minute…and now, two million on June 15th.

How will this affect Google TV and what is next for this TV? Will the sales continue to remain steady for a while, or drop sharply? Likely, the company will release another product soon, one which similarly references the “smart” label, increasing interest and demand in the Smart TV again.

LOVEFiLM now offer new hardware that is ready to access their service and allow you watch films online through your television, without having to even worry about your computer. The service is available through certain Sony and Samsung TVs, as well as Sony Blu-Ray DVD players.

Possibly the biggest problem when you want to watch films online is the need to sit in front of a PC or laptop as you watch. Most of us don’t have our computers in a place that is set for relaxing, nor do we have machines that make the most of dynamic sound and expansive effects.

While laptops can be taken to a more comfortable location, the problems with limited screen size (designed, after all, to be viewed from no more than 2-3 feet away) and weak speakers are still massive issues, and threaten to undermine the benefit of watching films online.

But this doesn’t have to be the problem that it initially seems.

Firstly, connecting laptops and PCs to the rest of your home entertainment system is no longer the domain of the hyper computer literate and requires no specialist software, as you might fear. One simple output cable switching the output from your computer or laptop costs little and allows you to watch films online in comfort and without losing any of the impact that modern films demand if they are going to be enjoyed to the full.

Not only this, but LOVEFiLM now offer new hardware that is ready to access their service and allow you watch films online through your television, without having to even worry about your computer. The service is available through certain Sony and Samsung TVs, as well as Sony Blu-Ray DVD players.

One assumes, too, that other products will be available before you know it, but having the entire LOVEFilM library attached to your TV may revolutionize the way that we think about films, in the same way that the lineage from Napster to Spotify, through the ubiquitous iTunes, has changed the way we keep our music libraries. With broadband speeds only getting faster, perhaps a personal library of films will become a thing of the past entirely.

Canesta has announced that it is being acquired by Microsoft. Canesta's technology and patents could bring Microsoft a step closer to letting users control the computer with their mind, instead of a mouse.

Microsoft has announced that it has acquired Canesta, a leader in 3-D sensing technology and maker of chips that allow game systems and other electronic devices to recognize gesture controls. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Canesta is a leader in 3-D sensing technology, which is critical to making Natural User Interfaces (NUI) possible. According to Jim Spare, Canesta president and CEO, “This is very exciting news for the industry. There is little question that within the next decade we will see natural user interfaces become common for input across all devices. With Microsoft’s breadth of scope from enterprise to consumer products, market presence, and commitment to NUI, we are confident that our technology will see wide adoption across many applications that embody the full potential of the technology.”

The Canesta technology works by beaming a ray of light off multiple objects in front of a CMOS receptor, like that found inside of a digital camera. But extremely high-speed timers attached to different portions of the sensor can actually detect how long it took for the reflected light to reach it, calculating the distance the features are away from it, like a very high-precision radar. This helps the chip “see” the object. Canesta is essentially the very same company, which provided the gesture control technology behind the Sony Eyetoy.

The sensing technology that Canesta provides could be built into Microsoft’s Kinect gaming sensor for Xbox. The current gaming sensor is made by PrimeSense, a rival to Canesta, according to the Times. Kinect is an Xbox add-on that gives users control of the games by using their bodies. It will go on sale on November 4.

Canesta PC Demo Video

The possibilities of using natural user interfaces are immense and it has been a focus of Microsoft’s for years. Recently, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called natural user interfaces one of the next big revolutions to come in technology. Ballmer gave the example of removing the mouse to connect with a computer, similar to how Kinect works.

Although Microsoft hasn’t said to what purpose it will put the Canesta technology, the company’s Kinect accessory for the Xbox uses a technology from PrimeSense to help “see” users.

Toshiba has taken the covers off its new Satellite A665 3D-ready gaming laptop to herald the resurgence of 3D entertainment. It has a 15.6-inch high definition screen, Blu-Ray drive and some powerful specs including the latest powerful Intel Core i7 processor. And a pair of 3D specs. Read on to learn lots more about the 3D-ready Toshiba Satellite A665.

Toshiba is set to become the first PC maker to put a 3D-capable Blu-ray Disc laptop on sale, it said. The company’s Dynabook TX/98MBL will hit Japan in July and is based around a 3D system from graphics-chip maker NVidia.

Also known as the Satellite A665 in Europe, the TX/98MBL is a 15.6-inch laptop with 3D Blu-ray playing compatibility. There may be few 3D Blu-rays out there at the moment to watch, but Toshiba’s putting the hardware up first. This new 3D ready laptop will allow users, most likely gamers, to enter the third-dimension.

The new model, the Toshiba Satellite A665, will be powered by a combination of Nvidia 3D Vision technology and the latest Intel Core Series processors to bring you images “that leap off the screen“. Toshiba’s laptop has a 15.6-inch display and a Blu-ray Disc drive with support for 3D movies. The laptop is based around an Intel Core i7-740QM processor and the GeForce chip in use is the GTS 365M, said Toshiba. NVidia’s “3D Vision” system combines one of its GeForce graphics cards with a pair of active-shutter glasses and a plug-in transmitter to send sync signals to the glasses and software. Disappointingly though, despite the screen’s size, its resolution is a meager 1366 x 768, so not even full HD.

- The A665 also offers a 15.6-inch screen, Harman Kardon stereo speakers, Dolby Advanced Audio and feather-touch multimedia controls.

- The A665 comes with Intel Core i7 (Quad Core) processor, up to 4 GB DDR3 (1066 MHz) RAM, up to 500GB of HDD with 3D impact sensor, Nvidia GeForce GTS 350M graphics.

- Toshiba Resolution+, Toshiba Media Controller, Toshiba LifeSpace

- Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR, WLAN (802.11 b/g/n), Gigabit Ethernet LAN

- There is also Blur-ray Disc rewritable drive, 1.3 MP webcam and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

- Pre-installed 3D content

- Energy Star 5.0 qualified

The 3D laptop will go on sale in July in Japan for about ¥250,000 (£1,900) – time enough for one or more of Toshiba’s rivals to sneak in a machine of their own. Toshiba plans to put it on sale overseas but isn’t ready to announce launch plans.

Google Android isn’t just the name on everyone’s lips when it comes to mobile phones. The open-source OS has also made it on to mobile internet entertainment devices, netbooks and other gadgets. An android device is not necessarily a Phone; not always. It can be anything from the categories given below. Here is a list of 7 non-phone gadgets that run on Google’s Android OS but aren’t mobile phones.

1. Archos 5 Internet Tablet with Android (32 GB): The Archos 5 Internet tablet/portable media player offers a large, high-resolution touch-screen display, Wi-Fi, music playback, photos, Flash video and game compatibility, Bluetooth, e-mail, a Web browser, a built-in speaker, an integrated kickstand, GPS, and support for a limited selection of Android applications. hanks to the optional accessories such as the HDMI Minidock and the DVR Station, the ARCHOS 5 internet tablet will become your one and only media center, letting you benefit from the exceptional quality of your HD TV to watch movies like never before, at full resolution. And with the DVR Station, you can record your TV and thus transform your TV experience into a mobility experience. Last but not least, the ARCHOS 5 internet tablet lets you easily access over 1,000 webTV stations (and over 10,000 webradio stations).

On the down-side, GPS signal reception in Archos 5 Internet tablet is poor enough to make the feature useless; many popular Android apps are unsupported; Flash video support is hit or miss; no multi-touch support for keyboard or gestures; text copy and paste is a chore; and the glossy design shows fingerprints.

Word is that Menq is planning on selling this puppy for a mere $80. Although it’s not available yet, it will likely be sold through retail outlets. It is also supposed to be able to dual-boot Windows CE and Android. What’s more? It has got video gaming included into the feature lists, recently.

In other words, an iPad for the Apple haters. This is a tablet that is, in some ways, almost a phone. It features a 10.1-inch touch screen, and an almost full-sized keyboard, as well as Wi-Fi, GPS, a Webcam and integrated 3G.

This could be the first Android tablet (meaning touch screen netbook) by a major U.S. PC manufacturer, although Dell is rumored to be working on both an Android tablet and a netbook. It’s powered by a 1-GHz Snapdragon processor.

Three-D TV will require brand new television sets and related equipment, which companies like LG Electronics, Panasonic (PC) and Toshiba were eager to show off this week at the Consumer Electronics Show. Special 3-D goggles are required for each viewer, unless the set has Auto Stereo Display - which then only works if everyone is situated directly in front of the set at a specific distance. Otherwise, it's a blur. Your best bet: Shell out for a pair for each family member and expected guests. The cost of all this equipment could run into the thousands, preventing a surge of early adopters still too strapped to even buy a regular HDTV or wise enough to wait until the technology catches on - if it ever does. And skimping on a 15-inch screen won't cut it: For 3-D to be effective, it needs to be huge-- which is why the technology is best seen in a movie theater, as it has been for decades.

When Samsung presented it’s all new 3D TV in recent CES 2010 presentation, it caused a stir among technology enthusiasts. If you had any doubt that the big thing in televisions this year will be 3D, then Samsung’s CES press conference would have finally convinced you. The company is throwing its rather large manufacturing weight behind 3D in the home, bringing not just TVs but 3D Blu-ray players and home theater systems into stores this year.

3D Televisions are everywhere in 2010, but I doubt the TV viewing world’s willingness to quickly take the plunge. Call me practical, jaded or simply a good, old-fashioned stick in the mud, but when it comes to consumers upgrading to 3D television anytime soon, I just don’t see the point. Much ado has been made about this new technology at CES 2010 by manufacturers such as LG, Sony, Samsung, Toshiba and Panasonic, with one in four consumers surveyed by the CEA saying they plan to buy a 3D TV within the next three years. However, while ESPN plans to roll the first official 3D sports network on June 11, and consumers are predicted to spend $17 billion on 3D TVs in 2018, per research firm DisplaySearch’s forecasts, I’m just not sold on the concept’s potential rapid consumer uptake.

Here are 3 main reasons why I feel that the world is perhaps not ready to upgrade yet and it is too early for the Manufacturers to start selling them:

1. Current Lack of Demand. It’s one thing to experience 3D technology while sitting in front of a three-story screen versus one’s living room, where it’s more of an event, and your everyday living room, where the activity becomes more mundane, making it hard to justify the cost of an immediate upgrade. Besides, since when was 2D storytelling and filmmaking broken to begin with? Fueled by hit films like Avatar and Up, interest in 3-D has hit a fever pitch – and both cable networks and electronics manufacturers are taking notice. Their conceit: If it works in the theaters, why not in the living room? And that inherently flawed notion is leading companies to sink billions into a trend that probably won’t last long.

2. Counterintuitive. It’s bad enough having to hunt for the remote in your couch cushions. Now imagine having to do the same for 3D glasses that not only make you look goofy once located, but could also prove quite uncomfortable to wear in long-term sittings. Is this really the glorious future sci-fi novels once promised? Maybe, if you’re into migraine headaches, occasional screen flicker and, well, you know, looking a complete toolbox.

3. High cost of 3D TV. Three-D TV will require brand new television sets and related equipment, which companies like LG Electronics, Panasonic (PC) and Toshiba were eager to show off this week at the Consumer Electronics Show. Special 3-D goggles are required for each viewer, unless the set has Auto Stereo Display – which then only works if everyone is situated directly in front of the set at a specific distance. Otherwise, it’s a blur. Your best bet: Shell out for a pair for each family member and expected guests. The cost of all this equipment could run into the thousands, preventing a surge of early adopters still too strapped to even buy a regular HDTV or wise enough to wait until the technology catches on – if it ever does. And skimping on a 15-inch screen won’t cut it: For 3-D to be effective, it needs to be huge– which is why the technology is best seen in a movie theater, as it has been for decades.

I really don’t see what the big deal is about 3D. It was always much more of a nuisance, what with the glasses and eye strain. I wish companies would stop worrying about this crap and look into OLED more. Perfect the performance of your televisions before you move onto uncharted territories. What do you think?
