While Chang Ma is basically doing what he is paid for, and that includes creating hype around impending product releases from the company, this is probably a statement that borders on the incredible. Or does it?

Incidentally, iPad currently stands on its own as being the tablet device all the others need to beat to claim a space in the emerging tablet market; a market that’s likely to be getting crowded very soon. And LG seems to be confident that it has the answer — “Our Android tablet will be better than the iPad. It’s going to be surprisingly productive. The race hasn’t started yet.“

“The first LG tablet, which will run on Google Inc.’s Android software, will set itself apart from Apple Inc.’s iPad by focusing on the ability to create content, rather than simply display it“, Mr. Ma said in the interview. “LG Optimus tablet is going to be surprisingly productive,” he said.

True to those words, in a marketing release LG has revealed that this tablet will focus on content–creation and have features and benefits which will help you create documents, edit videos and programs.

There aren’t any hardware details for LG’s Optimus tablet yet, but you can expect a screen around 10 inches, and enough power under the hood to run Android 3.0 (to be released later this year). LG expects to launch the tablet worldwide by the fourth quarter.

LG Optimus Android Tablet may also use a screen similar to those found in high end laptops to add to the productivity of the device. This should make it popular across all sections of users.  So clearly LG is aiming at a different market than Apple with their tablet and that’s probably for the best. Rather than focusing on competing directly with the iPad, companies like LG with their Optimus line and HP with the Slate 500 are trying to fill the void left by the entertainment-oriented iPad.

And it’s good that LG is trying to position the product in a manner which will help in fulfilling gaps left by the iPad’s inadequacies. If this tablet also aimed to be a complete entertainer, not only would it be labeled as a ‘me-too’ product but there would also be very little to get excited about.

Is that (LG Optimus Android Tablet) going to be a winning formula? Maybe, maybe not, but LG seems confident it has what it takes to at least compete, if not beat, the iPad. A legitimate rival to the Apple iPad? That would be good.

Android has already made a big impact in the mobile phone industry and it’s looking to do the same for tablets. Fortunately, for Android, more and more manufactures are unveiling plans for tablets and the vast majority are choosing Android (sans HP with their Web OS tablet). If you weren’t aware of non-phone Androids, then here is the time. Below we’ve rounded up everything we know at this point about ten most discussed upcoming Android tablets and why they can be the iPad Killers.

Acer Tablet:

The Acer tablet looks strikingly similar to Acer’s LumiRead e-book reader that was announced at the same event back in May. Not much details have been revealed about this much awaited tablet but we do know that it will feature a 7-inch (800×400) color display, will run Android, and has a likely Q4 release date.

Archos 7:

The Archos 7 has in fact been launched and it features a 7-inch (800×400) color display, a whooping 8GB of internal storage along with a micro SDHC slot (for additional storage) and an ARM Cortex A8 processor. The Archos 7 has been available since March and it comes for $199.99.

Cisco Cius:

Cisco Cius was revealed last month when the networking giant made it’s plans clear to join the tablet arms race. The Cius will pack a 7-inch screen, a 720p webcam on the front and a 5 megapixel camera on the back. No firm launch date has been declared yet, but Cisco has stated that they’re shooting for early next year.

Dell Streak:

The Streak is actually closer to a large cell phone than a tablet. The streak will feature a 5-inch display, 5 megapixel camera, and integrated social media apps such as Twitter and Facebook. No solid release date has been announced for the Streak, but its unlocked price is expected to be somewhere around $500.

Google Tablet:

Details are still blurred on the rumored Google Android Tablet. There have been reports that Verizon and Google are working together on a tablet, but at this point we don’t even know if Google’s Tablet will run on Chrome OS or Android.

ICD Ultra:

ICD’s follows up its 15-inch Vega tablet with the ICD Ultra, a smaller Android-based device. The ICD Ultra will feature a 7-inch touchscreen display, a NVIDIA Tegra T20 chipset, and integrated 3G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Pricing and a final release date are yet to be known.

Notion Ink Adam:

The Adam will be the first tablet on the market to feature the Pixel Qi display. The 10-inch transflective LCD display offers 3 different modes for viewing including a reflective e-paper mode for low power viewing even in bright sunlight. The Adam is expected to be released in Q3 of this year in selected countries. And if you are an Indian, we must tell you that this iPad competitor is being developed in India.

Pandigital Novel:

The Pandigital Novel can be classified as an eReader but since it features a web browser and media player we think it crosses into tablet territory as well. The Novel will features a 7-inch color 800×600 touchscreen, an SD card slot for adding storage, and will integrate with the Barnes & Noble eBookstore. It will be priced at $199 and is slated to go on sale this month.

Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000:

Samsung unveiled a picture of its upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab last month and it certainly  looks like the Apple iPad’s smaller twin. It will feature a 7-inch AMOLED display, Android 2.2, 16GB of internal storage with a microSD expansion slot, and will be powered by a 1.2GHz A8 processor. The Galaxy Tab is expected to launch sometime this summer and a larger 10-inch tablet from Samsung has been rumored to follow.

Velocity Micro Cruz Tablet:

Velocity Micro will step away from its luxury gaming throne to dabble in the emerging Android tablet market with the release of their Cruz Tablet this summer. It will feature a 7-inch touch-screen, 4GB of built-in storage, and will accept SD cards for additional storage. The Cruz Tablet will release this summer at a surprisingly low price of $300.

How to Play Flash Content on iPad Whether Steve Jobs Likes it or Not

Flash on iPad ? Steve Jobs says, “No, it can’t happen because flash is not meant for its touchscreen technology.” But he is proven wrong by a developer with his new program, the Frash. With Frash, he was able to run flash on an iPad. This is the same developer who brought us the Spirit jailbreak decided to port the mobile Flash plug-in for Android to Apple’s iOS.

He has managed to get Adobe Flash content to run on a jailbroken iPad, using a compatibility layer. He has managed this by porting Android Flash runtime to iPad. Comex is calling the port of the Android Flash runtime for the iPhone as Frash. The code is described as “extremely beta” and may not meet all the functionality of Flash on supported platforms, but frash has been demonstrated running Flash applications on the Safari browser natively.

Okay, so you have to jailbreak your iPad to use Frash. But if you don’t want to miss all those cool flash games, may consider jailbreaking the iPad. It may even work the same way on iPhone but only on the 3GS and iPhone4.

Frash won’t be able to address the issues that has prevented Apple from allowing Flash on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch but it seems to be the best bet for users who are missing Flash.

We had heard that Apple confirmed this 512MB figure during one of the WWDC sessions last week, and have now verified this. The added RAM should help overall performance and multi-tasking on the new iPhone 4. It could also explain why the iMovie App that Apple introduced at WWDC will only run on the iPhone 4. Apple has said iMovie will only run on the iPhone 4 and not the 3GS or even the iPad. It seems conceivable that it actually makes use of the extra RAM offered by the iPhone 4.

Furthermore, it seems that the new change is aimed exactly at improving the iPhone’s multitasking performance, according to an Apple representative. With the old 256MB of memory, a lot of time and power went wasted into memory management, which will no longer be an issue. Some of the new features of the iOS 4, which will be launched on Monday, will allow programs such as Skype and Pandora to accept incoming VoIP calls, or play music while another application is taking focus in the foreground.

The mobile operating system upgrade will also let users quickly switch between in-memory applications using an “app tray” that appears when users double-tap the iPhone’s home button. The 256MB mark appears to be the minimum required for iOS 4 to multitask; while iPhone 3G owners can still upgrade their phones to the new OS, they won’t get multitasking.

However, this confirmation of 512MB in the iPhone 4 contradicts evidence gleaned from photographs of prototypes leaked by the Gizmodo technology blog in April, and a Vietnamese site last month. In both instance, experts said that the next-generation iPhone would probably have only 256MB, the same as in the iPhone 3GS and the iPad.

- 2 million iPads sold, 10 countries. 19 countries by the end of 2010.

- 17 apps per iPad, 35 million apps downloaded.

- Apple sells an iPad every three seconds.

- There are over 8,500 native iPad apps in the App Store.

- iBooks is getting updated. First 65 days, 5 million e-book downloads. So 2.5 books per iPad. 5 of the 6 biggest publishers in the US say that 22% of eBooks sold in the US are sold in the iBookstore.

- There have been over 35 million app downloads on iPad, so approximately 17 apps per iPad.

- You can view PDFs and take notes and mark pages in iBooks now. It’s just like a book.

App Store Announcement

- Apple supports two platforms, HTML5 and the App Store; or so Steve Jobs says.

- 225,000 apps in the App Store that are available in 30 languages.

- 15,000 new apps are received every week, 95% of these apps are approved within 7 days.

- 5% of the apps that get rejected are the apps that don’t do their advertised function, use private APIs and apps that crash a lot.

- Netflix coming to the iPhone this summer for free.

- Zynga will introduce Farmville for the iPhone. You can access your farm from the iPhone, buy animals (some exclusive to the iPhone), and even get push notifications for your crops.

- Activision is releasing Guitar Hero for the iPhone, which will include the ability to create custom rockers and post content to Facebook. Available for just $2.99, it utilizes tapping mechanics, but it also has strumming mechanics for iPhone. This actually looks quite hard to master, though.

- 5 Billion Downloads from the app store. Last week, they crossed the threshold.

iPhone 4 Announcement

- iPhone has 58.2% market share of US mobile browsing usage. Android is at 22.7%.

- The new iPhone is 24% thinner than the old model and is made from Stainless Steel and Glass. The glass is 30x stronger than plastic. It can bend and take damage. iPhone 4 the thinnest iPhone yet.

- The display has a new technology called a retina display, packing 326 pixels per inch.

- It has two microphones for noise canceling and integrated antennae to improve signal.

- When compared to the display on the 3GS, the iPhone 4’s display looks much sharper. The screen also has an 800:1 contrast ratio to give 4x the resolution and 4x the contrast of the 3GS.

- iPhone 4 is powered by the Apple A4 chip.

- New camera system focuses on capturing photos and not the megapixels. They’ve gone from a 3MP to a 5MP sensor, but they’re using a backside illuminated senor to get a lot more photons. It also has LED flash, 5x digital zoom, records HD video — 720p at 30 fps, built in video editing and one click sharing.

- You can do video chat through your iPhone 4 and it will be called Facetime.

- It works with either the front or rear camera on the phone, works in portrait or landscape, and appears to be WiFi only at this point. Facetime works on iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 only.

- The phone will also come with Quad-Band HDSPA/HSUPA for quick data transfers.

- iMovie for iPhone, will allow users to send video via MMS, upload to Youtube, send video in emails and upload to MobileMe. Will cost $4.99 in the App Store.

- The phone does have the reported front-facing camera.

- 40% increase in talk time to 7 hours, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, 10 hours of wifi browsing, and a whopping 300 hours of standby time.

- iPhone 4 goes on sale in the U.S., France, Germany, the UK, and Japan, on June 24.

- It will come in 16GB and 32GB capacities, priced at $199 and $299, respectively. Apple will also add an 8GB iPhone 3GS, priced at $99, to its lineup.

iOS 4 Announcement

- iPhone OS 4.0 has been renamed, iOS 4.0.

- Allows for “multitasking done right,” as Jobs said. Apple’s multitasking allows for apps to be hibernated, run in the background and switched while still running, apparently without adversely affecting battery life.

- Folders can be dragged to the dock. Folders are named automatically based on genre of apps, but can be renamed.

- Unified inbox comes to iPhone.

- Google remains the default search but now Bing is an option as well as Yahoo.

- The final release candidate out.

- 100 million iOS devices sold.

- Releases on June 21st for upgrading devices.

- Will support most features on 3GS, some on 3G.

iAds Announcement

- iAds to help developers earn money so they can continue to create free and low-cost apps.

- Apple has been selling iAds for the last eight weeks. Apple sells and hosts the ads, making it easy for developers.

- Brands include: Nissan, Unilever, AT&T, Chanel, GE, Liberty Mutual, State Farm Insurance, Geico, Cmabell’s, Sears, JCPenney, Target, Best Buy, DirecTV, TBS, Disney.

- iAd comes online July 1st.

- And you can win a new car through the ad.

The iPad is primarily a touchscreen device to be held and navigated with your hands, but there is also a Keyboard  Dock accessory allowing for easier typing. Using the dock makes the iPad feel like a desktop machine, but it does miss one additional device we all use on a daily basis: a mouse.

There has been a lot of talk the last couple weeks about whether or not the iPad can be a true replacement for netbooks. Taimur Asad realized this and decided to start experimenting with his jailbroken iPad. There is a free utility originally developed for the iPhone called BTstack Mouse which allows for Bluetooth mouse access. It is also compatible with the iPad, and as the video below demonstrates, allows the Apple Magic Mouse to be linked to the iPad. In so doing you can turn your iPad into a keyboard and mouse controlled device.

Although official Bluetooth keyboard support is in the cards for iPad owners, any similarly blue-tinted mouse control has yet to be confirmed, making this a tempting proposition for owners of the latest Apple creation.

In order to get Magic Mouse working with your iPad you need to first jailbreak it and then install BTstack Mouse app from Cydia. Start the app and allow it to discover Magic Mouse and then it should be working for you.

This might seem like an odd option to the uninitiated, but while the iPad is designed to be used via its touchscreen, some users who want to dock the device and use it as a (albeit limited) computing option might find this of great interest.

Although it’s almost guaranteed that the Apple iPad will sell well, there are still many complaints about the lack of various features such as multitasking (which might appear later this year), and the lack of flash support, pen input amongst other things.

It happened with the iPhone and it looks set to happen again with the iPad; consumer electronics manufacturers are rushing to bring out their own touch-screen tablet computers, with the latest being the WePad from German company Neofonie. Here, we round-up some of the most likely ‘iPad killers’!

1. Archos 9 PC Tablet

Archos has been a major player in the MID market since it started. The Archos 9 PC Tablet is the company’s largest slate device to date. It also proves that Apple isn’t the only one to out beautiful looking devices. With a price tag starting at $549, the Archos 9 PCTablet it is a great device and looks awesome. It comes with an Intel Atom Z510 1.1 G Hz processor, 1GB on-board RAM, and is available in two models, 80GB and 160GB. The high-resolution 9-inch touchscreen and the two positioned leg-stands make the Archos 9 perfect for media and hands-free viewing without having to purchase additional accessories.

It runs Windows 7, supports full-HD video playback, has a webcam for Skype calls and video conferencing and, unlike some other tablets we could mention (we’re looking at you, Apple), it’s compatible with Flash technology. Usability, however, leaves a lot to be desired when compared to the iPad.

2. Compal Tablet

This working prototype was shown off at CES 2010. Made by Compal, the 7-inch Android 2.0 tablet runs on the new, high-powered next-generation Tegra 2 processor NVIDIA announced at CES. With this chip, a device can support 1080p video playback, yet retain startlingly good battery life. NVIDIA says it already has several partners lined up to make Tegra 2-based tablets, so expect more of this type of device in the near near future.

3. Dell Mini 5

The Dell Mini 5 is the smallest tablet on the list with its 5-inch touch screen, but that just adds on to its ease of use. The device comes with a speedy 1GHz Snapdragon processor with WiFi, 3G and bluetooth connectivity. But the feature that really stands out is its ability to make phone calls (It’s like a big iPhone, or a small iPad that makes calls and fits in your pocket). Oh yeah, there’s also a 5MP camera on board.

4. Fusion Garage’s JooJoo

With it’s 12-inch screen and onboard camera, the JooJoo is a worthy iPad competitor. It supports Flash and achieves 1080p video streaming. The Intel Atom / NVIDIA Ion powered tablet has a great interface and more processing power which gives the user an awesome visual experience.

5. Google and HTC Tablet

Google is already crossing swords with Apple on the mobile operating front – its Android operating system and Nexus One handset compete directly with the iPhone – so it comes as little surprise that the company is also seeking to build a tablet computer based on the Android platform. Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, said his company had been working with several hardware manufacturers, and hoped to make its Android Marketplace available on other slate-like devices. Google is thought likely to partner with HTC – the company behind the Nexus One – for any tablet computing initiative.

The cited report says the Google Tablet has already been in development for the past 19 months. HTC is a plausible logical choice for the trusted partner as well, given its existing relationship with Google and the Android operating system. Still, with nothing yet official on the books, the Google Tablet is the most speculative entrant on this list for now.

6. HP Slate

Steve Ballmer, chief executive of Microsoft, took the wraps off the Slate during his keynote presentation at CES earlier this year. The HP device is due to go on sale later this year. It runs Windows 7, supports the Kindle e-book reader app, it’s multi-touch, and can even play games. Rumours suggest prices will start at around $549 – around $50 more than Apple’s entry-level iPad.

7. ICD Vega

Seattle-based startup Innovative Converged Devices announced its Vega tablet back in November 2009, and now the device is officially headed to T-Mobile UK sometime before the end of 2010. 8. ModBook

The ModBook is the original Apple Tablet — besides the Newton of course. Except it’s not made by Apple proper, but rather Axiotron who has been making them since 2007. The ModBook by Axiotron is an iPad and then some, including its Wacom-enabled 13.3-inch screen which you can write directly on for easy note taking. With a 120 GB hard drive, built-in camera and optical drive, the tablet is worth considering. It supports Flash, capable of multitasking and it’s even Windows compatible. Prices start out at $899, but customers have to provide a pre-polycarbonate unibody Macbook making the total price closer to $2,000.

9. Neofonie WePad

The WePad may be the most complete alternative to the iPad with Linux at the core and access to the Android Marketplace. WePad is priced a bit lower than the iPad and comes with a web cam and 2 USB. Its 11-inch screen, faster processor, and bigger RAM makes performing multiple tasks a bit easier. And of course, it supports Flash!

10. The Notion Ink Adam Android Tablet

News about the Notion Ink tablet broke late last year and many chalked it up to a fanboy dream. But it’s real and supposed to be coming this spring from Indian startup Notion Ink. This is another tablet running Android and powered by the Tegra 2 chip and a 10-inch tablet. It uses a screen technology from Pixel Qi that combines the best of a full color multi-touch LCD display with a low-power reflective mode that’s readable in direct sunlight.Notion Ink says the Adam should come to market in the second quarter of this year, with a target price somewhere between $300 and $800.

With its sleek design and 10-inch touch screen, the Notion Ink Adam Tablet is to be desired. It also boasts a 16-hour battery life and 3MP camera. Also unlike the iPad, the tablet features a browser that supports Flash. Maybe the most striking is the Adam’s revolutionary Pixel Qi screen. The transflective LCD screen can switch between color and black and white modes for e-reading.

11. Bonus Contender for iPad Alternatives – Viliv X70

This widescreen 7-inch tablet has nearly every piece of hardware missing from the iPad. Viliv X70 is Windows compatible, supports Flash and has slots for SD cards and USBs. The Viliv x70 comes with a feedback touchscreen and unlocked 3G GSM modem. Its multitasking capability, built-in camera, and faster processor make it a windows-friendly iPad competitor.

It looks like it probably will be more of a movie-tie in than Avatar, but I have hope for the game. I’m extremely excited for the open environments of New York the game features, letting you free to  roam around them.
