What to Expect From Apple’s iCloud

It was a moment with mixed feelings when Steve Jobs introduced iCloud to the world at Apple’s annual WWDC [Worldwide Developers Conference] in San Francisco. As he introduced Apple’s long-awaited iCloud service and platform, Jobs noted how the act of synchronizing multiple devices has “broken down” of late.

Noting that devices have changed over the past decade, with people now using photos and videos on the go, the PC should no longer be the hub for your digital life, with all media hosted on the computer. “Keeping these devices in sync is driving us crazy,” Steve told the crowd.

What is iCloud?

To address the new reality, Apple Inc. has moved the digital hub to the cloud. iCloud stores your music, photos, apps, calendars, documents, and more. And wirelessly pushes them to all your devices — automatically. It’s the easiest way to manage your content.

All iOS devices can talk to the cloud whenever they want, with instant propagation to all other devices. With iCloud, users get 5GB of free storage for mail, documents and backups; purchased music, apps and books don’t count.

iCloud completely replaces MobileMe. Mail, contacts, and calendar are all free. Contacts and calendars will be updated across devices, just like they currently do, but there are several new components to iCloud.

“Some people think a cloud is just a hard disk in the sky,” Steve told the crowd. “We think it’s way more than that.” iCloud stores content (think contacts, calendar, photos, music), with wireless push to all devices. And with APIs providing developers with hooks into iCloud, all apps can take advantage of the service.

However, bandwidth constraints are still a huge challenge. So with content like movies, which require so much space, we’ll have to see what happens. But just starting with documents, cloud computing will fundamentally change how we write and collaborate on projects.

Will iCloud ‘Legitimize’ Music Pirates?

Interestingly, Apple’s new cloud music service has been heavily criticized by some of the big players from the music industry for supposedly encouraging piracy by allowing people to essentially legitimize their pirated music collections.

But we don;t think Apple will be condoning piracy and it’s better for the labels to have a transparent system run by Apple than some nefarious P2P site. Besides, what pirate would bother uploading their collection to a cloud when they probably already have an iPod full of the music anyway?

Bomgar, the market leader in appliance-based remote support app provider, has launched the latest update to their Bomgar Appliance. The appliance is the very first collaborative remote support representative console designed for the iPad, iPad2 and iPhone (devices running Apple’s iOS). Bomgar iPad Rep Console will allow IT support technicians to access, view and fix a computer or mobile device remotely, using an iPad, iPad 2 (or even an iPhone and iPod Touch).

With the launch of this iPad remote support software, Bomgar now enables IT support and service technicians to remotely support the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, by providing users with custom configuration profiles on their Apple iOS devices. With a few simple clicks, users can automatically configure their email, calendars, device security policies, VPN settings, Wi-Fi settings and more.

Bomgar iPad Rep Console lets support technicians work on multiple remote support sessions at once, plus invite other in-house and external support reps to simultaneously collaborate on the same session. Customers, on the other hand, will not need to have pre-installed software on their device, or be part of any pre-defined “buddy list” to receive support, according to Bomgar.

Furthermore, the iPad Rep Console works in conjunction with the Bomgar appliance, making it the only iPad remote support solution that does not pass session information through a third-party server, keeping sensitive data safe and sound behind a company’s firewall.

Emphasizing that enterprises work under strict compliance regulations, Nathan McNeill, co-founder and VP of product strategy at Bomgar said — “With the Bomgar iPad Rep Console, we’re giving support technicians the flexibility and mobility they need, plus the security assurances their companies require.”

Bomgar says one in three North American companies now support the iPhone as a business platform. It is no surprise, Bomgar feels “CIOs can no longer afford to ignore the time their support team is spending to help users configure these devices…”.

iPhone and iPad Remote Support With Bomgar [ Video]

“Giving enterprises the tools to automatically and securely configure the iPhone and iPad is another step in our commitment to providing the most robust and secure remote support solutions for mobile devices. We’re closely evaluating the evolution of the various mobile platforms, and we’ll continue to provide customers with the most advanced remote support options possible as new devices hit the market”, according to the company. The Bomgar iPad Rep Console will be available to all Bomgar customers this summer.

So here we go. Enjoy trying these more than 30 awesome hacks, tips and tricks that work even on the latest generation of iPod Tough 4G with iOS4.

Hidden Tips and Tricks on How to Turn Your iPod Touch 4G Into a Super Gizmo

- For rearranging Home Screen icons, tap and hold an icon until they all start to jiggle. Drag the icons around to rearrange them, and when it is satisfactory, press the home button.

- If you’re scrolling through a long document/page in an application – if you tap the status bar (the bar at the top of your screen containing the time and battery), the application will automatically scroll up to the top of the document/page.

- Instead of sliding across the page, tapping immediately left or right of the page dots on the Home Screen and Weather will move to the next page.

- To take a screenshot of any screen of your Touch (including the lock screen), hold the power and home buttons and release them. A white flash will appear on screen and a screenshot will appear in your Photos application.

- Need a spare cleaning cloth for your iPod touch, or an extra cloth to rest your Touch on while at work or school? Just go to your local vision care store (or pharmacy) and get an eyeglass/sunglass “cleaning cloth”. Cheap and works great!

- If you wish to change your device’s root SFTP password, open Terminal and type ‘passwd’. You will then be prompted to change your password.

- Whilst in Mail’s inbox view, sliding your finger from left to right on a message the ‘delete’ button will appear. This also applies in the list view of the Videos application. You can also delete Mail in bulk by tapping ‘edit’ and selecting the Mail you want to have deleted.

- In Google Maps, double tapping zooms in as expected, but single tapping with two fingers zooms out.

The API, which was released in June as part of a mobile device management (MDM) bundle for iOS 4.0, has been disabled in iOS 4.2, leaving perplexed vendors to question why. The API had previously allowed third-party MDM applications, such as AirWatch or Sybase's Afaria, to check for unauthorized modifications to the system files.

Six months after introducing an API to help enterprise and security applications tell if the OS has been compromised, Apple has disabled or removed the “jailbreak detection” method from iOS 4.2, Network World reports. The unannounced discontinuation was noticed by device-management vendors but will not affect their ability to detect compromised iOS devices, they say.

Third-party MDM vendors had created their own utilities to check for jailbreaks, but Apple’s jailbreak detection API granted MDM applications direct access to iOS system information.

“We used it when it was available, but as an adjunct,” said Sybase vice president of engineering Joe Owen. “I’m not sure what motivated their removing that….I’ve not had anyone [at enterprise customer sites] talk to me about this API being present or being removed.“

The API was part of a set of mobile device management features incorporated into iOS 4. It essentially allowed applications to audit the OS to determine if the system had been compromised, the usual method by which jailbreaking code is injected. Some vendors speculated that because the OS audit itself could theoretically also be compromised, the API would eventually become useless anyway.

“Whatever [Apple] adds [in the OS] to detect the jailbreak, if it is to be queried from the iOS kernel, it must be accessible and have the ability to be changed,” security consultant Jeremy Allen told Cox. “Meaning, if it is going to be a useful detection method it can also be circumvented. It is a fairly intractable problem to solve 100%.“

Shutting down the API, while useful for companies worried about the potential security risks jailbreaking poses, won’t leave companies and developers out in the cold. There are other methods they can use to detect jailbroken devices, and in many cases those solutions are already in place. Apple hasn’t commented on its decision to pull the API. The move shouldn’t, however, be interpreted as Apple endorsing jailbreaking.

The Apple iPod Touch or iTouch is an amazing multimedia device that changed how we interact with our portable entertainment devices. Nevertheless, that change would not have been possible without its amazing software library. Without further ado, let’s look at our picks for ten best iPod apps of all-time.

1. Facebook

Social networking is as integral to our lives now as email has been for the last decade. Facebook is the social networking king, and this free app gives us all the power we need to network right from our iPod.

2. Tweetie

Sure, there are plenty of “good” free Twitter apps, but Tweetie isn’t just good, it’s amazing, and it will only set you back several dollars. Not a bad investment for an app you’ll use every day.

3. Wikipanion

Who doesn’t use Wikipedia at least once per day? By default, Wikipedia is difficult to read on the iPod, but this apps formats it so that it’s easy navigate, read, and search.

4. Google Earth

There is no shortage of map apps on the market now, but Google Earth is the original and still the best. Google Earth is a free iPod app that you’ll likely use far more than you’d ever suspect.

5. Pandora Radio

This is a completely free radio-listening experience for your iPod touch that even synchronizes with iTunes. What more could you want? How about a radio that learns your likes and dislikes, and caters itself accordingly?

6. The Weather Channel

This must-have app for those on the go provides you with constant and immediate access to weather information for your area. You can even setup multiple profiles (locations).

7. Reeder

Most iPod users will agree that Reeder is tops in the RSS segment. No other app manages a minimalist approach and is still able to pull off elegant and feature-rich like Reeder does.

8. Stanza

There are plenty of great eReader apps for the iPod, but we’ve added Stanza to the best-of list because of the amazing access to free reading materials that it provides.

9. Dropbox

Dropbox is an amazing service that allows you “drop” items – documents, photos, music, and videos – from your iPod to an online storage service. You can even mark items for offline viewing, and if you have other i-devices, you’ll have access to Dropbox from them too.

10. Flashlight

Flashlight is an app that seems silly until you find yourself in need of a flashlight, and then you realize how useful it is. As the name suggests, this apps turns your iPod into a flashlight, and it’s a must-have.

An iPod Touch is an iPhone without the phone. You have to admit that it is what the iPod Touch is! It can do practically what the iPhone can do, except for the “real” phone line part. The best thing about the Touch is that it burns a much smaller hole in your pocket than its mobile phone counterpart! Ever wondered how to turn your iPod/iPad into a fully functional Mobile Phone? Here’s this new app for iPod Touch (and iPad), which will turn the mp3 player (and the Apple tablet) into a full blown mobile phone!

Toktumi Inc. has announced that its popular Line2 iPhone and iPod Touch app is available on Apple’s iPod touch and iPad. Line2 turns your iPod Touch and iPad into a powerful mobile phone, no cellular carrier needed! With Line2 you get unlimited US/Canada calls over WiFi VoIP plus unlimited US/Canada texting. International long distance rates starting at $.02/min. and texts are only $.10.

In addition, it’s the first and only truly dual-mode VoIP/cellular calling app for the iPhone, meaning that among other features, customers can place and receive calls over Wi-Fi or over cellular using the same number. Line2 also gives you powerful calling features, including 20 person conference calls, caller ID, visual voicemail, and much more for only $9.95/month all with no long term contracts. And with Line2 when you’re traveling overseas you can make free calls back to the US and Canada wherever you have a WiFi connection.

Line2 makes sense for business users who are often hanging around Wi-Fi hotspots at the office or on the road. There are other text messaging apps and VoIP apps for iOS, but none of them have the smoothly combined feature set of Line2. With text messaging added to the equation, it makes the 30-day free trial worth checking out. Business users who want to get into a more robust calling system can upgrade to Toktumi’s $14.95 per month deal that includes an auto attendant, custom greetings, visual voicemail and other PBX features.

Line2 WiFi VoIP Cell User Guide Video

Line2 is a $0.99 download in the app store. It is listed among iPhone apps however is compatible with the iPad and the 2nd generation iPod touch as well. Just download Line2 to your iPod Touch or iPad and pick a number, setup your current Toktumi number, or port your existing number for free. You can start making and receiving calls and texts in a minute. Start your free trial today!

The original idea behind it is to provide a second line (hence the name, duh) for the iPhone, making some serious savings for the user. It works both via 3G and Wi-Fi – you can see the huge potential for this. As you are probably thinking now, Apple is not going to be very happy with Toktumi anytime soon. I bet users will be ecstatic though. What do you think?

Apple iPhone is a mighty functional device with whole lot of apps available from the Apple’s App Store.

In this post, we are going to present here the top 10 free iPhone app of all time. The 10 best of the lot available for free iPhone apps are listed below. If your favorites aren’t covered, tell us all about them in the comments.

1. Google Earth

Have you used Google Earth on your PC? And you love it, right? To put it in a simple way, now you can have the whole world in your pocket, literally. Google Earth iPhone app is a free and very powerful application, which allows the user to view utter mind-blowing satellite imagery at the palm of your hand.

2. Skype

Skype is the new revolution; the world is talking on it. Why not the iPhonians? This app enables the user to log in to Skype on your iPhone. Ok, we agree that it’s imperfect and annoyingly lacks push notifications, but this is still an essential download. The interface is pleasingly simple and usable, enabling anyone with a Skype account to make free calls to other Skype users and cheap calls to anywhere in the world.

3. Pandora

How many of you still love to have a radio? You can have thousands of songs in your iPhone but still you cannot compete with the versatility of a Radio. Pandora fulfills this dream of having a radio in an iPhone. This is the app, which connects you to the Pandora’s music service directly. Pandora App has emerged as one of the most popular App after the initial launch of the App Store. It allows iPhone users to access the enormous database of music available at Pandora.com.

4. Facebook

Who in this world is not having a Facebook account? Almost everybody has it. So, the app for the most loved social networking site should be loved the most. Once this was just an ugly duckling, but that’s history and what we have now is version 3 – a social-network-aware swan. The revised grid-based ‘home screens’ provide speedy access to regularly visited sections (news feed, notifications, and so on) and pages, and the experience is such that it, in many ways, beats the browser version.

5. WordPress 2

Are you a blogger? And do you use WordPress? If your answers are yes, then this is for you. As a blogger, it is important to be able to respond to commenter on the go – especially on the solution-based posts, which are time sensitive and it is really important to respond quickly when someone is looking for an answer. This app is also a good tool to store future blog ideas. Simply type in the title and perhaps a bit of brainstormed notes and save as a draft to be completed when you get to your main computer.

6. TwitJump 1.0

This is the app for you if you are one of those Twitter addicts. The first screen on TwitJump allows the user to choose the Twitter account he would like to log into. TwitJump can be used for either business or personal Twitter activities with the availability to link over 21 accounts. Just tap your login name, enter your password and you are now viewing Timelines where you will find all of your current important Twitter information, such as Followings, @Replies, DMs, Lists and Alerts. Ain’t it cool?

The TwitJump app is free. However, costs begin to incur when you begin to add in features. Anyway, TwitJump is offering a free 14-day trial with full access to the app. No credit card is needed to sign up. Simply enter your name and email address – then choose a password and you are able to check out the application in its entirety for two weeks without being charged a penny. At the end of the two-week trial TwitJump will send you a notification with options to continue the service with the options of your choice.

7. Meebo

Do you have a Gtalk a/c? Do you have a yahoo messenger account? Do you have a Windows Live account? Then you must check out this app. Meebo allows you to sign into as many of them, using a single app. This can be much more convenient than having to download separate versions of the Yahoo Messenger app, AIM app, etc.

8. Trapster

My younger Brother always had this dream; he wanted to work for the cops. I presented him an iPhone with this app installed on it. He was overjoyed. Trapster is one of the best free iPhone apps because it just may save you from getting a speeding ticket. Basically, It is an application that is frequently updated with news on Speed Traps, police check points, red light cameras, and more. Not only does Trapster update the app, but users can also report speed traps and other police spots, which updates the app.

9. Comics

This is a little awkward compared to using it on an iPad, but you won’t find a better comics experience on an iPhone. The app is free, as are dozens of downloadable comics – and once you run out of those, many more are available to buy. Reading works on a frame-by-frame automated ‘zoom’ basis, and is surprisingly usable. Must have app for a diehard comic fan like me!

10. AppMiner
I love free apps and I find them using this (free app). With over 150,000 apps now on the Apple store, it is easy to lose track of everything that is going on.
If you’re a MacHead, everything that Steve says it’s law. If you’re not a MacHead, maybe this post is not for you. Anyway, in this roundup I’ve collected 60 of the most inspiring Steve Jobs quotes. Enjoy!

Steve Jobs! Did anybody notice? He is not wearing a turtle neck today. Did anybody notice? He has not shaved. Did you notice? He went to a restaurant where I use to go every weekend. Did you notice?

That is Steve Jobs. I don’t shave, nobody cares. Steve does not shave, Apple shares drop by 20%. He is the man with the talent and the best (albeit, sometimes controversial) sort of marketing skills. He has consistently brought innovative technology to the world; technology, which made our lives better and smarter. First computer with mouse; the renowned Macs, portable music players otherwise called as the iPods, tablet PCs – iPad and a many more.

He was also the CEO of PIXAR studios, which delivered some cool movies like Toy Story, Wall-E and so on. His name fascinates a huge crowd and he has a huge group of fan following him. Some criticize him, some praise him. Ask me! I praise him. He has given so much to the world of technology that nobody could ever imagine. I have collected some awesome quotes said by the genius. Do share, if I have missed any:

1. We’re gambling on our vision, and we would rather do that than make “me too” products. Let some other companies do that. For us, it’s always the next dream. Interview about the release of the Macintosh (24 January 1984)

2. Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me … Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me. On the success of Bill Gates and Microsoft, as quoted in The Wall Street Journal (Summer 1993)

3. When you’re young, you look at television and think, there’s a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that’s not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That’s a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It’s the truth.

4. Nobody has tried to swallow us since I’ve been here. I think they are afraid how we would taste.

5. It’s really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.

6. Pixar is the most technically advanced creative company; Apple is the most creatively advanced technical company. As quoted in Fortune

7. Click. Boom. Amazing! MacWorld “Intel Inside” keynote address (January 2006)

8. I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.

9. No one wants to die. Even people who wanna go to heaven don’t wanna die to get there.

10. Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

11. The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.

12. A lot of companies have chosen to downsize, and maybe that was the right thing for them. We chose a different path. Our belief was that if we kept putting great products in front of customers, they would continue to open their wallets.

13. Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.

14. Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

15. Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.

16. Why join the navy if you can be a pirate?

17. You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.

18. Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.

19. The only problem with Microsoft is they just have no taste. They have absolutely no taste. And I don’t mean that in a small way, I mean that in a big way, in the sense that they don’t think of original ideas, and they don’t bring much culture into their products.

And the best of all…

20. When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: “If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

The burning smell of an iPod can stop a moving train. It did in Tokyo, where a passengers burning, overheating iPod caused a train to stop, think it was on fire, and then realize it was just an iPod. And that iPod had burst apart, so that isn’t good for Apple, the passenger, anyone.

An unidentified, malfunctioning iPod brought a Tokyo subway train to a halt for an eight minutes during this morning’s rush hour, Reuters reports. Around 8:20AM passengers complained about a burning smell, forcing the train to come to a halt while officials went searching for the source. A female passenger then came forward to show that her iPod had burst apart after overheating.

The train was stopped in western Tokyo’s Setagaya Ward for eight minutes — quite a long time for Tokyo’s busy train schedule — at around 8:20 a.m. local time. “When a member of staff went to investigate inside the train, a passenger came over showing him that the iPod she was listening to had burst apart,” the spokesman of the rail line operator Tokyu Corp told Reuters. No injuries were reported.

Apple has declined to comment. The debacle may only worsen Apple’s public image in Japan, which has been marred somewhat by a series of incidents in recent years, involving first-generation Nanos overheating and in some cases producing fire or sparks. The Japanese trade ministry now claims that there have been about 60 such cases, including four that caused minor burns; the number is up from a recent tally of 34.

Apple has described the problem as rare, and attributable to a single battery supplier. At the same time, though, the company recently began a replacement program, ordered by the Japanese government. Prior to formal demands, Apple Japan is said to have been unresponsive to pressure to take market steps, such as issuing warnings or a recall. At any rate, it isn’t good news for Apple, considering the recent claims that reported iPhone 4 bursting into flames (with pics to prove)!
