When he announced the iPhone, Steve Jobs said to expect three things: “an incredibly great cell phone,” “the best iPod we’ve ever made,” and “the Internet in your pocket.” One out of three isn’t bad. Yes, the iPhone is the best iPod ever—ironic for something not even called an iPod! But it’s just a plain lousy phone, and although it makes some exciting advances in hand held Web browsing, it’s not the Internet in your pocket.

Agree or not, the iPhone isn’t a perfect phone by any means. It can’t multi-task or show Flash content on webpages, it doesn’t accept external SD card memory, it is limited to a 3 megapixel camera and it requires you to use iTunes. Whatever is your reason for not getting the new Apple iPhone 3G, fortunately it’s not the only smartphone out there and there are plenty of alternatives to it. In this article, we will look at five of the top smartphone alternatives to the iPhone. So without further ado, we present to you the top five iPhone rivals that have surfaced over the recent years, in no particular order.

Is an iPhone 3G too costly for you? Do you just dislike the iPhone in general? Then take a look at these great alternatives.

Blackberry Bold 9700:
The Blackberry has traditionally been seen as a smartphone for businessmen but it can be great for every-day consumer use too. It is the only one of our phones not to have a touchscreen but it makes up for it by having a full QWERTY keyboard and trackball for input. It’s business background is clear: the phone comes with mobile versions of Word and Powerpoint. The phone has some decent multimedia features and owners have access to the Blackberry App World to download extra applications.

Operating System: Blackberry OS
Touchscreen: N/A, physical keyboard and trackball input
Camera: 3.2 megapixels

Google Nexus One:
Google launched their own phone in January 2010 called the Nexus One. Running Google’s own Android operating system, the phone features voice recognition and voice-control. Nexus One also features integration with various Google services and a free Google Maps GPS navigation. It currently runs the latest version of Android – 2.1. Sporting one of the best virtual keyboards of its class, and with all the brilliant apps the Android market comes with, the Nexus One is thoroughly recommendable. Specification wise the Nexus has a 5 megapixel camera, 3G, Wifi, a 1Ghz Snapdragon Processor, a 3.7-inch (diagonal) widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, internal GPS, a high capacity 750 hours stand by time battery, 512MB RAM, a memory expansion slot upgradeable to 32GB, haptic feedback technology, proximity sensors and light sensors. However, the Nexus One isn’t quite the game-changer people hoped it would be, though it certainly trumps other phones in performance, display quality, and speed.

Operating System: Android
Touchscreen: Multi-touch, heat-sensitive (capacitive) touchscreen
Camera: 5 megapixels

HTC Hero:
The HTC Hero is a multi-touch Android smartphone with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS, wi-fi and HTC’s Sense interface. The phone has been highly rated in the press: Mobile Choice named the Hero as their ‘phone of the year’ when it launched. As it runs the Android operating system which gives you access to the large wealth of applications in the Android Market.

Operating system: Android
Touchscreen: Multi-touch, heat sensitive (capacitive) touchscreen
Camera: 5 megapixels

Palm Pre:
Palm Pre is almost certainly, if not definitely, the best smart phone in the world for multitasking. The Pre will manage everything all at once seamlessly without so much as a sweat – quite literally, as battery life for all this multi tasking is pretty good. The Pre has the ability to link contacts, combine messaging and supports universal search. Pre’s webOS is gorgeous and easy to use and comes with highly responsive multitouch display. The key difference with the Pre’s WebOS operating system is that information from sources such as Gmail, Facebook, Outlook and Yahoo! are all collated together to produce a single address book. WebOS also collates together all of your conversations with each contact: for example instant messages and text messages will appear together in a single chat window. Unfortunately, there is no app store for the Palm Pre in the UK yet.

Operating System: WebOS
Touchscreen: Multi-touch, heat-sensitive (capacitive) touchscreen, slide-out physical keyboard
Camera: 3.2 megapixels with flash

Nokia N900:
Like the Palm Pre it has a strong multitasking OS, Wifi, bluetooth, a QWERTY slide up keyboard, assisted GPS, Micro USB port, an ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz Processor. It comes with 32 GB storage, and supports a MicroSDHC card for up to an additional 16GB. The screen is only resistive touch instead of capacitive, but is 3.5 inches and 800×480 pixels. The camera is 5 MP, 2576×1936 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, auto-focus, Dual LED flash, video light. The Nokia N900 is a phone which really appeals to the geeks and gadget fans. Nokia calls the N900 a ‘mobile computer’. It runs the Linux-based Maemo operating system – the same OS previously used on the Nokia internet tablets. Because of it’s Linux background, it’s super-customizable and can run applications such as a Firefox web browser with Flash support. My favourite feature of the N900 is the ability to hack it and play around it but you probably won’t want it as your first smartphone.

Operating system: Maemo
Touchscreen: Pressure-sensitive (resistive) touchscreen
Camera: 5 megapixels

Do you recommend another smartphone that can join the elite list of iPhone rivals? We’d love to hear from you. Drop us a comment below.

Opera Software today launched the newest beta version of the world's most popular browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini 5, on the Android platform. Opera Mini 5 beta for Android brings a fast and cost-efficient Web experience to any handset built on the Android platform.

Opera Mini 5 Beta was first introduced about 5 months ago, but owners of Android-based smartphones had to wait until now to get their hands on Opera’s nifty mobile browser. Opera Software today launched the newest beta version of the world’s most popular browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini 5, on the Android platform. Opera Mini 5 beta for Android brings a fast and cost-efficient Web experience to any handset built on the Android platform.

Why consider Opera over the built-in, WebKit-based Android browser? For one thing, if you’re using Opera on the desktop, you can enable Opera Link support to sync up your bookmarks and start-up page links. If you find yourself more often than not on a slow connection, you’ll also like Mini’s ability to set lower image quality and thereby speed up page loading, restoring the images once you click them.

With the addition of new feature like multiple tabs, copy-and-paste, bookmark manager, password manager and of course more support for touch-screen models, Opera Mini seems to have consolidated its position as the most versatile mobile browser overall. Their strategy at the moment is probably to innovate for more powerful phones while keeping OM 4.2 open for lower-end models as they still offer a low-memory version 3 for very simple mobiles.

To get Opera Mini 5 Beta, point your mobile browser to m.opera.com/next, click “Download Opera Mini 5 for Android” and follow the instructions and you’re done! Alternately, you can also search for “Opera Mini” in the Android Market.

Opera Mini 5 is bigger at 221 KB than its 125 KB predecessor and uses more phone resources. Given the new features this is to be expected but it also means that some older or lower end phones that can run Opera Mini 4.2 will not be able to use Opera Mini 5. In particular, Palm OS devices and BlackBerries running OS 4.1 are no longer supported. There is also no Android version of Opera Mini 5 yet although one is promised. Opera Mini 5 is optimized for screen sizes of 240×320 and larger. It will work on smaller screens but some menu options will be off screen and unreachable. You should be able to work around this using Opera Mini’s keyboard shortcuts.

I’m particularly excited about the tabs, copy/paste and the password manager. These are features that were really needed and will really enhance usability and my ability to get things done online with my phone. Overall I recommend the Opera Mini 5 Beta, give it a try. It installs alongside 4.2 and 3.1 rather than overwriting them so you have nothing to lose.

A site more or less built around shortened links, Twitter is a veritable Candyland for Phishing scammers — a phenomenon that has really taken hold in the past year or so. But looks like the recent LOL phishing scam that ultimately became a huge spam wave has made Twitter to put some breaks on such attempts and Twitter is finally being proactive about the large number of phishing scams that have plagued the micro-blogging service in the past year.

Yesterday, Twitter introduced its own anti-phishing service that allows Twitter’s Trust and Safety team to monitor all links submitted through the service for potentially malicious attacks. The new security measures will focus on Twitter direct messages (DMs) — private tweets addressed to a specific user — and corresponding e-mail notifications. Twitter believes DMs are the primary source of Twitter-based phishing attacks, and has not yet announced any plans to extend the new service to regular Twitter messages. Part of the new feature will involve the use of Twitter’s link shortener twt.tl, which may now start popping up in some of your emails and direct messages.

In a blog post, Twitter’s director of trust and safety, Del Harvey, said that the company is deploying the service as a way to keep users safe from the increasing levels of phishing and other malicious activity on the site.

” Today, we’re launching a new service to protect users that strikes a major blow against phishing and other deceitful attacks. By routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service, we can detect, intercept, and prevent the spread of bad links across all of Twitter. Even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we’ll be able keep that user safe. Since these attacks occur primarily on Direct Messages and email notifications about Direct Messages, this is where we have focused our initial efforts. For the most part, you will not notice this feature because it works behind the scenes but you may notice links shortened to twt.tl in Direct Messages and email notifications.” Harvey wrote in the blog post.

Of particular note is that, regardless of what URL shortener Twitter users use, they might end up seeing links shortened to a twt.tl domain. Does that mean that Twitter is putting the other URL shorteners out of business by creating their own? Maybe. That would be bad news for URL shorteners like bit.ly, who’ve made a business out of offering advanced analytics to uses who submit links through their website.

We’ll be watching our timelines for twt.tl links in the coming days and weeks, and more importantly, we’ll be keeping our eyes out for hackers who manage to get around the new system – because nothing is flawless when it comes to internet security.

For more than 20 years researchers all over the world have been working on the development of a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and looks like the Computer-Human Interface has a new contender technology. Though we’d like to think we’ve come a long way with computers, the keyboard and mouse remain the predominant way we interface with them. We’ve had the unfulfilled promise of handwriting and voice recognition and hope that something better will come along sooner or later. Perhaps this is it – the world’s first commercial effort at a patient-ready brain computer interface is on display over at CeBIT 2010, but don’t go throwing out your keyboard and mouse just yet. Intended for patients suffering from locked-in syndrome and other communication-impairing conditions, the Intendix from Guger Technologies allows users to input text using only their brains.

$12,000 Mind-reading Intendix Technology Will Type Your Thoughts for You

Meet the Indedix, an accessory that hooks up to any computer and allows you to control it with the power of your mind alone, like some kind of Jedi. The Intendix is hardly the first Brain-Computer Interface (or BCI) to come along, and it works similarly to the rest, measuring EEG output as input data. However, it is the most consumer friendly, costing just $12,000, which is pretty cheap for this kind of technology.

Intendix enables the user to select keys from a matrix just by paying attention to a target symbol on the screen. In this way the patient can write messages or commands. intendiX can speak the written text, print it or copy it into an e-mail message. The system is designed to be used without the assistance of a technician and can be installed and operated by the caregiver. For most users intendiX works pretty fine after only a few minutes of training. For paralyzed patients the system has to be tried and evaluated in every specific case.

While this device may be a let down for gamers eager to reduce the wear-and-tear on their wrists, it is a boon for people who are severely disabled or suffer from “locked-in syndrome.” It allows them to more fully interact with the world outside them, helping them be less dependent. And even disappointed gamers will agree that’s a good thing. Another reason for gamers to be let down: a retail price tag of $12,000. Luckily, there is a rent before buy option available.

No matter how the computers of the future will read our thoughts, there’s little doubt that they’ll be communicating directly with our brains. That level of BCI technology is fairly far off on the horizon, however. Right now we have Intendix; the ability to go to a store, buy a device, and start typing with my thoughts is enough to keep me happy for a while.

Microsoft Office is a great productivity suite to take care of your office needs but there are two negative points that forces it’s users to wish if they had an alternative. The main disadvantages with MS Office suite are:

1. You can not carry it everywhere with you. e.g. Lets say you are on a holiday trip and purposefully left your laptop back at home (because you didn’t want to be distracted by your work) and then the unthinkable happens; your boss gives you a call at night and begs you to prepare a power point presentation and few more documents and get them ready when you get back from the holiday, tomorrow. And the nearest computer at your hotel lobby does not seem to be having MS Office installed. Damn! You wish you had not left your laptop back at home.

2. MS Office comes with a price tag and is not Free.

To overcome such shortcomings, the need of “Web Based Office Suite Service” arises. A Web Office suite is a combination of productivity, publishing and collaboration features. A Web Office both embraces the functionality of desktop office suites (e.g. Microsoft Office) and extends it by using Web Native features.

The key to defining a Web Office is to limit it to the type of productivity applications that you’d find in a suite like Microsoft Office. So a Web Office suite would be a set of tools that helps you be more productive in your daily office work, alone or as a group. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email, calendar – these are the traditional apps found in an office suite, and they’re as relevant online as on the desktop.

These days, there are is even more great software available to teams who want to assemble their own virtual office. Below are some of the tools every team needs to create their own online office:

1. Google Docs: Google Docs is probably the easiest to use of the various online word processing applications available today. It also has historically given me the fewest problems. It also supports OpenOffice .odt format (which not all word processors do). I’ve never had any issues logging into Google Docs and accessing my documents. You can upload files, create new files, access your documents anytime from anywhere. Also it has Google Gear support, which enables the user with offline access. When you have internet access, you can view and edit your docs in real time and when you’re offline still you can get all the features but it will sync with the online version only when net connection is established.

2. Zoho – Office: Zoho Office Suite is a spry little collection of modules, taking only two seconds to launch the word processor (Writer) and spreadsheet (Sheet). The suite is extensive: it includes Projects (project management software), Show (presentations), Virtual Office (groupware with a calendar, e-mail client and more), Creator (database manager) and Planner (an organizer for reminders and notes). Zoho Writer does a fine job of covering the basics you need most days: check spelling, align text, create bulleted or numbered lists and control fonts (size, style, color). Don’t go expecting much beyond the basic features, however. It’s not as rich as Word or ThinkFree: The spell checker will underline mistakes, for instance, but you can’t right-click and find the correct spelling from a list.

3. ThinkFree: It’s not always the smoothest application to use, but their Java-powered power edit mode is definitely the most advanced online word processor and feels a lot like Microsoft Office XP. It’s the only online office app I know of that has support for Microsoft’s .docx format. ThinkFree has three main components — Write (a word processor), Calc (a spreadsheet), and Show (presentation software) — all of which are listed on the site’s My Office page, along with your most recently edited files. If you’re concerned about document compatibility with Microsoft Office, you want ThinkFree. There’s simply no contest.

4. Peepel: Peepel is a free online office suite with document collaboration and maps. Peepel includes a permission based, people tracking system which allows you to see where your friend’s are on a map. Peepel provides spreadsheet and writer, and it is really stylish to work with. You can work in the same window with spreadsheet and writer and all other peepel accessories, without having to toggle your view between the screens.

5. Live Documents: Live Documents is an online office productivity suite that gives you the powerful productivity features of Microsoft Office coupled with the collaboration and mobility of Google Docs. Live Documents is the only online office suite that provides “non-lossy roundtripping” for Microsoft Office documents – rest assured that the documents that you import do not lose fidelity.

6. AjaxOffice: This cool little web based office service is from SourceForge. This is a complete office suite usable via your browser. Your documents are safely stored on a server so that you don’t have to worry about backups and you can access them from every computer in the world! AJAXOffice is to OpenOffice what GMail (Google Mail) is to Mozilla Thunderbird.

7. fengOffice: Feng Office allows businesses to manage project tasks, billing, documents, communication with co-workers, customers and vendors, schedule meetings and events, and share every kind of electronic information. Furthermore, all features are easily accessible within a single web page and accessing an integrated view, business managers and directors can get a clear picture on the status of projects and customer services, assisting them on the decision making processes.

8. gOffice Web Word: This is a browser-based online word processor and desktop publishing program, which is a wrapper around Microsoft Word 2007. This means you can implement a subset of the features found in Word on your website. The output quality of the files will be oustanding because the files will be true Word files. In a single line, gOffice offers a mini-suite of word processing, desktop publishing, presentations and spreadsheets.

9. Num Sum: This is a web-based spreadsheets. This interesting service that lets you share spreadsheets. It lets you track your records, lists and data online and share with everybody or with just your close friends. NumSum was an early “social spreadsheet” service. When it first came out it was hamstrung by the spreadsheets not being shareable. However I’m happy to see that this feature has since been added, enabling multiple users to edit a spreadsheet.

10. TechChunks Office Suite: I might have listed this at the end of my list but make no mistakes.

Meet Google, The Big G! The noun that quickly became a verb and before we knew it had found its way into our dictionaries. The world’s most favorite search engine, and the company whose motto is “Don’t be evil“. But has it ever occured to you that Google could be a Beast? Meet Google the beast, the hungry beast. I found this very scary video on YouTube that describes Google as a Hungry Beast. This video basically tells us how — “Google has become a self aware entity and since then it has been pretending that it isn’t, slowly taking over every sector of the digital and real world until the right moment where it can enslave/slaughter humanity. Things become even scarier if we consider the fact that, they (Google) are usually really good at what they do!” It’s no wonder why Intel’s CEO called Google as — “A Company on Steroids, with a finger in every industry“!

However, I think its just quid pro quo. I am often frustrated by the failure of people to understand that nothing is ever free and when you use Google’s services, you must expect to pay for it in some way. If you don’t expect that, then you are both selfish for wanting both free and high quality service and stupid for thinking that you’d get it from a private company. Any information about yourself that you give them is entirely at your discretion. Also undoubtedly, many lawsuits that Google faces are from people trying to get easy money. You get access to tons of free (no monetary cost) awesome services or products and Google get some info about you. Until Google abuses their access to information, I plan to keep using their products.

On another hand, the fact that Google owns Youtube, as this video points out, and this video hasn’t been removed from YouTube is proof that Google is not as evil as people say they are. Evil destroys all dissent — even those normal people would see as outlandish. Even our most ‘benevolent’ companies typically ban someone for continually saying negative things of their product on their sites. A search engine that expanded into multiple fields which makes profits by ad revenue, doesn’t make a company evil.

I would actually say that – “stop whining and welcome to the internet“! The trick perhaps is to surf the internet not expecting full privacy. However, if you want to surf illegal stuff, use your neighbor’s WiFi!

As an electronic reader, Apple’s iPad has been touted as a possible “Kindle killer” but what has video game makers buzzing is the potential of the touchscreen tablet computer as a gaming platform.

“It’s going to be a really powerful handheld game console,” said Asbjoern Soendergaard, founder and chief executive officer of Tactile Entertainment. “It’s going to be an awesome gaming experience.” Soendergaard’s Denmark-based company is building a pet simulation game for the iPhone called “Pocket Creatures” and he said the iPad will allow the game developers to add “features that we only thought we could a year ago.”

The iPad’s larger screen, rich graphics and processing power has videogame and application developers around the world racing to put the final touches on programs for the iPad in time for when it hits the stores next month.

Gaming on the iPhone and iPod touch has been a huge hit for Apple — a neat, unique experience combining a relatively big screen, multi-touch controls, motion-sensor controls, network access for social gaming, in-app commerce for virtual goods, and more. The gaming experience on the iPad could be even crazier. And the iPhone game developers are really excited about it.

The iPad’s big screen in particular is going to bring a new element of fun and possibilities to the iPhone gaming platform. Besides just having larger, more vivid graphics, and more pixels to use for game controls, the iPad will offer more multi-touch input sensors, therefore adding new control possibilities to iPad games.

“We’re very excited about the iPad because it gives us more room to play,” said Brian Meehan, the head of worldwide product development at Sourcebits, a company focused on mobile applications and gaming with offices in Atlanta and Bangalore, India. “It’s got a larger screen obviously and more CPU,” Meehan said of the iPad’s central processing unit, what Tactile’s Soendergaard described as the “power under the hood.”

If you look at Sony’s PSP and all the other portable gaming devices they may be a little bit bigger than the iPod Touch or the iPhone but they’re all in that same size area. “Now you have this device that’s also going to be able to connect to (the Internet),” he said. “That in itself is a big playing field for everybody in the gaming world.”

Game makers are not the only ones bullish about the iPad. So are financial analysts and application developers. “We were able to demo the (iPad) at the launch event and were impressed by the gaming and e-book experience in particular,” said Ben Reitzes, an analyst at Barclays Capital.

Specifically, the iPad will support up to 11 multi-touch inputs — which means you’ll be able to control your iPad with all ten fingers and your nose. There’s all sorts of ways that could be figured in to games, ranging from new ways to navigate role-playing games, to new ways to control action games, to even more realistic or imaginative music games, such as a piano!

To be sure, there will obviously be some limitations for iPad gaming, like the device’s relatively hefty weight and its initially small user base. But if it’s ever cheap and/or popular enough to make its way into millions of living rooms, it could give gaming heavyweights like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony a run for their market. Are you as excited about the iPad games as are the game developers?

I’m sure you have seen lots of articles named something like Top 10 Killer WordPress plugins, 50 Best plugins for WordPress, or The coolest list of 25 plugins for WordPress etc. So, I thought may be I will come up with my own list of must-have WP plugins that I have tried here on TechChunks. Of course the selection is subjective and there are other plugins out there, which provide the same or similar features, but the ones below are proven and work together with several different installations I set up. Best part is — even on heavily customized WordPress installations with lots of self-written PHP code the plugins listed could be used without problems.

There’s no doubt that WordPress rocks as a blogging and content-management system. Once installed, you can do amazing things with it right out of the virtual box. In this post, I’m going to share with you the most essential plugins for your WordPress blog — 20 Must Have Killer Plugins for WordPress. I will explain why I find these plugins extremely useful as well as speak about some widgets that are worth using. These excellent WordPress plugins are intended to reduce and simplify tasks associated with blogging so that you can spend more time creating content, and less time with site administration.

For months, I’ve been able to bookmark hundreds of plugins, and now I’ve done all the work for you by sorting the best plugins you only need to truly leverage WordPress! In no particular order, here they are!

1. Akismet: Akismet checks your comments against the Akismet web service to see if they look like spam or not and lets you review the spam it catches under your blog’s “Comments” admin screen. This plug in can also check the trackbacks for spam. It’s no wonder why it’s already present in the default WordPress installation!

2. All in One SEO Pack: Optimizes your Wordpress blog for Search Engines (Search Engine Optimization). As the name suggests, All in One SEO pack provides an array of easy to understand options and helps your blog become SEO optimized. This is an absolute must have when it comes to SEO plugins. With over 2 million downloads and growing, I think it needs no more proof that it really works.

3. Google XML Sitemaps: This plugin will create a Google sitemaps compliant XML-Sitemap of your WordPress blog. It supports all of the WordPress generated pages as well as custom ones. Every time you edit or create a post, your sitemap is updated and all major search engines that support the sitemap protocol, like ASK.com, Google, MSN Search and YAHOO, are notified about the update.

4. ShareThis: The ShareThis WordPress plugin provides a quick, simple to use, and unobtrusive way for users to add your post to many social bookmarking sites, or to send your post link via email, AIM, Facebook, MySpace and more.

5. StatPress Reloaded: This plugin (previously known as StatPress) shows you real time statistics about your blog. It collects information about visitors, spiders, search keywords, feeds, browsers, OS etc.

6. WP-DB-Backup: WP-DB-Backup allows you to easily backup your core WordPress database tables. You may also backup other tables in the same database. It also allows you to optimize database, repair database, restore database, delete backup database , drop/empty tables and run selected queries.

7. LinkWithin: Unlike similar plugins that display a list of related posts, LinkWithin doesn’t just display a list of headlines underneath each post, but also a thumbnail with a picture from each post, which makes it far more attractive than most of its competitors. The plugin looks at tags, but it also analyzes other factors like relevancy, popularity, and recency. In testing LinkWithin on our own WordPress blog, the suggested posts were always spot-on, but obviously, your mileage may vary.

8. WP-Polls: WP-Polls is extremely customizable via templates and CSS styles and there are tons of options for you to choose to ensure that WP-Polls runs the way you wanted. It now supports multiple selections of answers.

9. Wordpress Thread Comment: This Plugin is an enhancement for Wordpress’s comment function. It enables users to reply on a exist comment, and the discussion will be displayed threaded or nested.

10. cformsII – contact form: cforms is a highly customizable, flexible and powerful form builder plugin, covering a variety of use cases and features from attachments to multi-form management, you can even have multiple forms on the same page!

11. WP Hyper Cache: WP Hyper Cache is specifically written for people who have their blogs on low resources hosting provider (cpu and mysql). This caching plugin can dramatically speed up your WordPress blog by generating static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your web server will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more resource-hungry WordPress PHP scripts.

12. CommentLuv: Comments are a way of your readers showing love for you and your blog. CommentLuv helps you to return some love by including a titled link to your commentator’s last blog post or tweet at the end of their comment. This plugint crawls your commentator’s site/blog , gets the latest URL (up to 10 latest URLs if the commentator is a registered CommentLuv user) and parses it as HTML beneath the commentator’s name when they click submit. No wonder why this plugin has been found to increase comments and the community spirit for the thousands of blogs that have installed it.

13. WP-Optimize: WP-Optimize is a wordpress 2.7++ database cleanup and optimization tool. It doesn’t require PhpMyAdmin to optimize your database tables. It allows you to remove post revisions, comments in the spam queue and un-approved comments within few clicks.

14. WP FollowMe: WP FollowMe is a Wordpress plugin that allows you to add a twitter “Follow me” badge on your WordPress blog.

15. WP Greet Box: This plugin lets you show a different greeting message to your new visitors depending on their referrer url. For example, when a Digg user clicks through from Digg, they will see a message reminding them to Digg your post if they like it. The plug-in also includes out of the box support for getting messages from users coming from Reddit, SU, Facebook, Google , Mixx, etc. You can also easily add your own custom greeting for people coming from any site you choose. Best of all, this plugin is compatible with WPMU and various WordPress cache plugins (so you do not have to sacrifice speed).

16. Popularity Contest: Shows your readers your most popular posts based on views, comments, pingbacks, among other criteria. You can also change the weight of each criteria to determine the most popular post.

17. WP Since Last Visit: Indicates with a small “New” picture beside your post to users who have not yet seen your post from their last visit. Also works with comments.

18. Maintenance Mode: Adds a splash page to your blog that lets visitors know your blog is down for maintenance. Logged in administrators get full access to the blog including the front-end.

19. Advertising Manager: This plugin will manage and rotate your Google Adsense and other ads on your Wordpress blog. It automatically recognizes many ad networks including Google Adsense, AdBrite, Adify, AdGridWork, Adpinion, Adroll, Chitika, Commission Junction, CrispAds, OpenX, ShoppingAds, Yahoo!PN, and WidgetBucks. Unsupported ad networks can be used as well.

20. Viper’s Video Quicktags: Tired of copying and pasting the embed HTML from sites like YouTube? Then this plugin is for you.

How many of these pugins are you using already? Would you want to add one to this list? Feel free to share your thoughts.
