Can BMW’s C1 Scooter Make a Comeback as the e-Version?

Will BMW’s legendary C1 scooter register a comeback as an electric version? According to the latest buzz out of the company headquarters in Munich the now presented C1-E model is a unique copy. So unique, that it can turn the tables for BMW and convert a jinxed model into an all-time great money-spinner for the giant auto manufacturer.

The BMW C1 scooter was released way back in 2001 and it only sold 12,000 units before shutting down and ceasing production just within a year.  However, the company has decided to give the BMW C1 scooter a second chance and is bringing the product back in e-version a.k.a. electric form.  Instead of gas, the new BMW C1 scooter will be powered by electricity, and the company is hoping that this new eco-friendly concept will grab attention of environment-conscious people.

BMW C1 Scooter Features:
Interior reading light
Anti-lock brakes
Sunroof
Heated grips and seat
Lockable glove box
Fun Audio System

Powered by a 125V plug-in Lithium Ion battery driving a 27bhp motor the C1 E will apparently get to 80km/h (50mph) in 7 seconds with a top speed of 100km/h (62mph). Range will be around 90km (55 miles). There is no word on pricing or availability at this time.

Although the BMW C1 scooter doesn’t go that fast (tops out at 62mph) it is still efficient enough to get people around in both the city and the countryside.  The BMW C1 scooter never made it to the US market the first time, however, it if makes it past the European market it could be a great alternative to people who want to successfully maneuver through traffic-clogged New York city.

From looking at the early-released pictures it appears that the bike is designed so that in the event of a crash, the rider is surrounded by a frame and roll bar. The seatbelt will keep the rider on the bike. However, the major flaw I see is that still the rider’s hands, arms, and legs will be exposed. But the good news is your head probably wouldn’t hit the ground.

It takes a lot of guts for a company to resurrect a failed model that was scrapped and sent to cold-storage, nearly a decade ago. Well, let’s hope the BMW C1-E doesn’t make everyone wear helmets anymore and become a interesting alternative for big car owners who are getting bored of finding a successful way to navigate in the crowded city traffic.

What do you think? Can BMW’s C1 Scooter Make a Comeback as the e-Version?
