There was a time when viruses use to scare the hell out of people. However, with advancement in technology the fear has submerged. However, that is not to say that we have completely got rid of viruses as today the hackers not just target the computer users but phone users as well. As the usage of Smartphone has increased all over the globe, it is right to say that your Smartphone is also facing danger of being compromised or the personal information might get stolen. Myriad of companies are making huge efforts to deal with this big treat. Many wonder whether an antivirus in a phone scan for spyware, adware and other threat. However, that is still unknown as every day viruses and malwares are created.

To start with, you must understand the difference between viruses and malware. Virus is a specific type of malware designed to replicate and spread, whereas a malware is simply a broad term describing all sorts of wanted malicious code. It includes viruses, spyware, adware, nagware, Trojans, worms and many more. Many believe that an anti-malware tool is designed to protect them from viruses, however that is not true.

Meanwhile, Android has been in use since quite a few years now and no doubt there has been concerns over its security. Some might believe that Android is not susceptible to virus threats if you take care of what you download and that it doesn’t need antivirus software. Still often it has been reported that malware is frightening common and any Android device without protection is certain to get infected.

Is Google Play a threat?

Even though it is the common belief that there are many of malware-infected apps proliferating in Google Play, but there is no statistical evidence to back the same. Thus it is believed that this threat was just spread to scaremonger the mobile users to install antivirus software.

Smartphones are, however, becoming increasingly more interesting for cyber criminals.

It is getting worse

It was found that the vast majority of malicious apps were discovered in Asia, particularly China, where there is no Play Store, and in Russia. Thus, it was quite surprising to know that more than 99 percent of malicious apps were not distributed via Google Play. So, it advised to avoid 3rd party sites or alternative sources for your apps. Also keep your Android platform and your apps up to date to get the latest security improvements.

Are the security apps right for you?

There are a number of Android security apps that combine anti-theft features with backup and antivirus, thus it would be useful to install them. However, a pure antivirus solution is not that worthwhile. Rather you should be careful about what you download and where from, what links you tap in emails and online, and the networks you connect to.
