Twitter has been focusing on the site lately a bit more than usual. The API still gets the lion’s share of attention, but a couple of new and rather big features have been popping up at Twitter.com for the past few months. The latest one isn’t exactly a game-changer, but it’s a welcome addition. Twitter has introduced a new feature called Hovercards. These are simply little windows that pop up when you hover over any name on your timeline.
Dubbed Hovercards, the new Twitter feature displays profile information about a particular user whenever a person hovers their mouse over a user name. Each Hovercard displays the person’s name and location. It also gives users the option of following or direct messaging those people without leaving the page. It’s important to note that a lot of people use Twitter through different applications and never even see Twitter’s actual site. It is nice to see that Twitter recognizes that people do still use Twitter.com. Hovercards display information like name, profile pic, location, whether or not you follow them, verified user info, etc.
“One way we’ve found these cards to be useful is to find out more about retweeted people and follow them right there. You can also see more information with an expanded view of the card,” says Twitter’s @jennadawn. “Sending direct messages to people you follow will also be possible with Hovercards so you can interact with tweeters without having to move off the page.“
Because many of you use twitter.com to read and write tweets, we’ve been spending some time focusing on ways to improve your experience on the site. Today, we’re introducing a feature called Hovercards that will be a handy way to interact with the folks behind each tweet,” Jenna Sampson, Twitter spokesperson wrote.
Hovering the mouse over a user name or avatar will pop up a small card with more detailed information on the user, full name, location, even the last tweet in the expanded view. If you click on the more link, the card will hold pretty much all there is to know about the user, the number of tweets, followers, bio etc.
It’s also possible to interact with the user inline by clicking the menu options which enable you to follow, block, even report the user or send a DM. As is usually the case, the feature isn’t live for everyone just yet, but should be rolled out soon enough. Users may not have access to Hovercards just yet, but rest assured, they’re coming soon enough. Have you got Hovercards on your Twitter profile already? Tell us what you think about this new Twitter feature.

Looks like Twitter is using some sort of “reputation rating” algorithm to set the priority. People with more followers are getting this feature first. Right now I’ve this in both my personal as well as professional a/c.
