And finally, uTorrent For Linux Is Coming

Most of you here must be aware of various torrent clients. If you are a torrent junkie and if you happen to be a Linux lover then you are going to love this news. uTorrent, one of the leading torrent clients for Windows saw its first public release in September 2005 and soon became the most widely used BitTorrent application. More than 50 million people across the globe use this every month and the statistics are increasing day by day.

Ever since the release of Windows client, the Linux and Mac users have been begging for its Linux and Mac counterparts. In 2006, when uTorrent was sold to BitTorrent Inc., the company announced that a Mac version was coming. In 2008, nearly two years after the announcement, it was finally released to the public.

And finally, uTorrent For Linux Is Coming

With the release of the Mac version of the torrent client, Linux users were the only group who were left out in the cold. But, now Linux users have good news for them. The uTorrent development team has just announced that they are working on a Linux version of the uTorrent. So do expect to be able to use uTorrent on your very own Ubuntu machine very soon. If uTorrent’s announcement is to be believed then Linux users will have a native uTorrent application this coming summer.

Not surprisingly, the Linux version is the most backed idea on uTorrent’s recently introduced Idea Bank. The Idea Bank is prominently featured on uTorrent’s website and allows users to submit and vote for ideas they want to see implemented. In just a few weeks the idea of a Linux version has been supported by 3254 people. This huge demand from users is one of the main reasons why the Linux version is now in progress.

The exact feature-set of the Linux client is unknown for now, but in common with other versions of uTorrent it won’t be Open Source. uTorrent Linux release might not reach the huge market share as it did on Windows, but, it’s definitely good to see that uTorrent will soon be available on Linux.

Whether or not the uTorrent Linux release will ever reach the massive market share it has on Windows remains to be seen. The Mac version has been well received but it is by no means the most used BitTorrent client on the platform. Whatever happens, it’s definitely good to see that uTorrent will be soon available on all three major platforms.
