The latest version of Apple’s mobile platform, iOS 4.2, is now available for the iPad, iPhone & iPod touch. This version is especially important for iPad owners, as it brings over 100 new features from the last three version of iOS to that device, most interesting among them being support for multitasking. Also, the Find My iPhone (or iPad or iPod touch) feature is now FREE to use without a MobileMe℠ subscription and helps you locate your missing device.
The multitasking feature enables users to keep several apps open at the same time and switch between them almost instantly, while preserving iPad’s battery life (which Apple refers to as “legendary”).
The iOS 4.2 update is available to download to iPad, iPhone and iPod touch by syncing the device with iTunes 10.1. iOS 4.2 is compatible with iPad, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, second and third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) and new iPod touch. Some features may not be available on all products. For example, Multitasking requires iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third generation iPod touch (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) or later.
As a part of release of iOS 4.2, Apple is making the “Find My iPhone” set of remote-control features previously found in its $99-per-year MobileMe service available for free to owners of at least one iPhone 4, iPad, or fourth-generation iPod touches. *The FREE “Find My iPhone” feature is available for iPhone 4, iPad or new iPod touch (4th generation). Find My iPhone allows users to pinpoint their device on a map, so it can be easily recovered when stolen or lost.
In addition, if you lose your iOS device but just know it’s around somewhere you can use Find My iPhone to make it play a sound, even if it’s been set to operate silently. You can also make it display a message, which can be useful if you’re trying to ask whomever found your lost device to give you a call and return it to you.
According to Apple, “Once you create an account on a qualifying device, use your Apple ID and password to enable Find My iPhone on your other devices running iOS 4.2.” So as long as your household has one current-generation device, you can use the feature on all your devices running iOS 4.2.
